The Dark Knight Rises viral campaign continues
More viral goodness to bring you this morning from The Dark Knight Rises, with the release of a new Bane t-shirt, and more interestingly, a map of Gotham listing various "strike zones".The new info comes courtesy of Superhero Hype, who were sent a package containing a t-shirt emblazoned with Bane's image and bearing the motto "Fire Rises". Pretty neat on its own merits, but more interesting was the packaging it came in.Attached to the cylindrical tube in which the t-shirt was delivered was a map of Gotham detailing a number of "strike zones", presumably a list of targets for Bane's terrorist uprising. The map makes reference to a series of "rally points" (one of which is presumably Gotham's mirror-image of Wall Street) as well as noting the potential response time for the Gotham City Police Department.Looks as though Bane's got quite the plan in mind for Gotham, with the League Of Shadows' plan to raze the city to the ground seemingly back up and running. We'll let you know as soon as the next viral nugget tells us more...

Howard Stern Joins NBC's 'America's Got Talent'
Fox Searchlight Pictures"The Descendants" Earlier this morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced the nominees for the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards -- which will take place in Hollywood on Sunday, Jan. 15 -- and there were numerous noteworthy surprises and snubs. Here's my best attempt to make sense of it all.our editor recommends'The Artist' Tops Golden Globe Nominations Golden Globe Awards Nominations: The Complete ListGolden Globe Awards Nominations: The Nominees' Reactions COMPLETE LIST: 2012 Golden Globe Awards Nominees NOTEWORTHY FACTOIDS The Artist, a black-and-white silent movie, garnered a field-leading six nominations: the film for best picture (musical or comedy), Michel Hazanavicius for best director, Jean Dujardin for best actor (musical or comedy), Berenice Bejo for best supporting actress, Hazanavicius for best screenplay and Ludovic Bource for best original score. Close behind on the nominations leaderboard are The Descendants with five; The Help, The Ides of March, Midnight in Paris and Moneyball with four; and Hugo with three. NOTEWORTHY INCLUSIONS The HFPA is famous for nominating famous actors and actresses for performances at which others scoff, and while last year's public chiding from host Ricky Gervais may have kept them a bit more in-line this year than in others -- indeed, there was no nod for Johnny Depp for The Rum Diary or Anne Hathaway for One Day -- they still couldn't resist making a few egregiously inappropriate nominations: Carnage has been pilloried by critics and audiences alike and no one associated with it has been nominated or honored by any other awards group, but Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet both managed to score best actress (musical or comedy) Globe nods. The HFPA really likes George Clooney and Ryan Gosling, so they doubled-down on them this year: Clooney was nominated for best actor (drama) for The Descendants, which is perfectly legitimate, and for best director for The Ides of March, which is surprising but justifiable, since they apparently liked the film enough to nominate it for best picture (drama). Gosling, meanwhile, was nominated for Ides for best actor (drama) and also for Crazy Stupid Love for best actor (musical or comedy). The HFPA also has some odd loyalties. For whatever reason(s), they seem to love Brendan Gleeson a lot more than any other awards group, having nominated him for best actor (musical or comedy) for In Bruges three years ago and now for The Guard, another little film that no one else is talking about. All things being equal, the HFPA will usually award a performance in a commercial studio film over a performance in a little indie, and this year was no exception. Among their selections this year: Jessica Chastain (for The Help rather than The Tree of Life) for best supporting actress, Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) for best actress (drama), and Jonah Hill (Moneyball) for best supporting actor. To their credit, they also managed to fit in a few standout perfs given by actors' actors in smaller movies, including: Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) for best actress (drama), Viggo Mortensen (A Dangerous Method) for best supporting actor, and Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) for best supporting actress. NOTEWORTHY SNUBS Somewhat surprisingly, the HFPA completely snubbed a handful of star-studded films, including Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, for which they could have nominated Tom Hanks for best supporting actor and/or Sandra Bullock for best supporting actress; We Bought a Zoo, for which they could have nominated Matt Damon for best actor (musical or comedy) and/or Scarlett Johansson for best supporting actress; Margin Call, for which they could have nominated Kevin Spacey and/or Jeremy Irons for best supporting actor; Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, for which they could have nominated Gary Oldman for best actor and Colin Firth for best supporting actor; Melancholia, for which they could have nominated Kirsten Dunst for best actress (drama); and The Tree of Life, for which they could have nominated Brad Pitt for best supporting actor -- not to worry, though, they took care of him for Moneyball! The HFPA also completely ignored a handful of critically-acclaimed indies that do not feature A-list stars, including Martha Marcy May Marlene, for which they could have nominated Elizabeth Olsen for best actress (drama) and/or John Hawkes for best supporting actor; Like Crazy, for which they could have nominated Felicity Jones for best actress (drama); Take Shelter, for which they could have nominated Michael Shannon for best actor (drama); and Coriolanus, for which they could have nominated Ralph Fiennes for best actor (drama) and/or Vanessa Redgrave for best supporting actress. Rather bizarrely, SAG, which is generally more conservative in its choices, nominated Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), the year's most unlikely breakthrough star, for best supporting actress, but the HFPA did not, despite liking her film enough to nominate it for best picture (musical or comedy) and her costar Kristen Wiig for best actress (musical or comedy). Others who were nominated yesterday by SAG but not today by the HFPA: best actor nominee Demian Bichir (A Better Life) and best supporting actor nominees Armie Hammer (J. Edgar) and Nick Nolte (Warrior). Because there are only five slots in the best director category, the HFPA could not accomodate A-listers like Steven Spielberg (War Horse), David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and Clint Eastwood (J. Edgar), to say nothing of the lesser-known directors of their best picture (drama) nominees The Help (Tate Taylor) and Moneyball (Bennett Miller). Difficulties Talks Bond
Promises Skyfall much better than QuantumSome people enjoy Quantum Of Solace, however the consensus is of course against us. Maybe the aim point-of-view is the fact that it is a better action movie than a Bond film, as well as on that score, it may sound like Difficulties is within agreement, getting just accepted to Break that Quantum was fatally jeopardized through the 2008 writers' strike.Skyfall, he promises, will improve.InchOn Quantum, i was fucked," states Craig, succinctly. "We'd the simplistic of the script after which there is the strike and there is nothing we're able to do. We could not use a author to complete it. You swear you may never try shit like this, after which it takes place!Inch Craig even discloses he wound up writing a few of the moments themself, together with director Marc Forster. "Along with a author I'm not...InchSkyfall's apparent decision to place aside the Quantum plot thread running using that film and it is predecessor Casino Royale, now will work better within the light of Craig's acknowledging "[Quantum] never was intended to be because a follow up because it maybe it was just wound up being one, beginning in which the 4g iphone finished. Personally, on an amount of feeling satisfied, I may wish to fare better the next time. That's vital in my experience.InchBut when he was disappointed in the second Bond outing, he appears looking forward to his third. "I truly think that one is much better even thanCasino Royale", Craig enthuses. "[Director] Mike Mendes has resided with Bond all his existence, and that he was raised with Bond in the same manner Used to do. We've the identical reference points, both of us such as the same Bond movies, and that we both such as the same bits within the same Bond movies we love to. We sitting lower and that we just rabbited for hrs about Live And Let Die or From Russia With Love, and spoken about little moments that people understood from their store. That's the way we began speaking about this. That is what we attempted to teach the script. He's been working his arse off and away to tie each one of these things together so that they seem sensible... inside a Bond way!"Skyfall is presently shooting, as proven by regular photographs of clapperboards around the official Facepage. We'll next see Craig on-screen in David Fincher's The Lady Using The Dragon Tattoo, that is in the United kingdom on December 26.

Condition
'Condition'A Synchronicity Films production. Produced by Amir Naderi. Directed, written by Andrei Severny. With: Jessica Kaye, Antonella Lentini, Steve Mosher.Part video installation, part earnest science tract, novice helmer Andrei Severny's "Condition" has moments of interest but seems uncertain what kind of film it wants to be. Taking place following an unspecified national emergency that could be a terrorist attack, the pic follows a sound therapist and her traumatized charge as they escape from Gotham into the Maine hinterland. Severny is intrigued by the science of sound and its uses in treating PTSD but this fascination hampers his ability to construct a tight feature. Producer and co-editor Amir Naderi's name should help "Condition" get bookings at indie-centric fests. "Sound to me is like touch at a distance," states sound researcher Mary Taggert (Jessica Kaye), traveling north with her patient Alaska (Antonella Lentini). Following a disaster, possibly in NY (the specter of 9/11, though not specified, is never far away), therapists were instructed to take a patient and drive to safety, but empty gas stations have forced Taggert to stop along a barren stretch of Maine coastline. Alaska, mute, is coping not merely with the current emergency but with something more personally harrowing in her past. Severny withholds details in order, one suspects, to universalize the trauma, yet it's impossible to escape the feeling that he's using 9/11 as the benchmark, reinforced by shots of a generic skyscraper with the camera racing up its side. A montage of images featuring cars, flames and sirens, superimposed onto Alaska's face, plays against the helmer's desire for subtlety, though it's possible to imagine this and other sequences projected on a gallery wall. Similarly, scenes of Alaska lying down in a white laboratory, listening to various sounds played for their therapeutic value, could be fascinating in a museum space with a superb stereo system, but here the sequences simply don't feel involving. Severny is a proselytizer for the psychology of sound (the production notes are full of solemn discussions of the science behind the pic's concept), yet the theme needed to be more strongly wedded to a solid story or divorced from narrative altogether. Alaska's initial obsessive reworking of a rope with knots is quickly dropped, only to reappear at the end, and her very name is unfortunate, likely to induce titters when Taggert shouts "Alaska!" across the Maine wilderness. Generally soft-edged visuals are so robbed of tonalities as to appear almost monochrome, further pushing the sense of a "serious work" treating a "serious topic."Camera (color, widescreen, HD), Severny; editors, Amir Naderi, Severny; production designer, Doug Fitch; sound, Richard Garet; associate producers, Dar Meshi, Irene Del Campo; assistant director, Chris Federico. Fate of internet rests on Dodgers
The survival of the entire cable funnel effectively is dependent around the disposition of future TV privileges from the La Dodgers, reflecting how abruptly sports TV fortunes can go up and down. When 2011 started, the very best two sports franchises in La, the Dodgers and also the Opposing team, were silently clicking off another year with Fox Sports his or her primary cable home. With 2012 beckoning, the Opposing team happen to be pried away by Time Warner Cable, and Fox is within lawsuit to preserve its hang on the Dodgers. The stakes are high for media titans. Time Warner is pressurized to create lucrative its multibillion-dollar resolve for British- and The spanish language-language systems devoted towards the Opposing team -- keeping individuals systems thriving throughout the nice and cozy-weather several weeks without regular-season National basketball association games -- while Fox might have to collapse among its two La-centric sports cable channels (either Fox Sports West or Prime Ticket) whether it manages to lose the Dodgers. "There is no doubt, because basically (Fox could be) left towards the Angels and hockey and lesser qualities," Sports Business Journal baseball and digital media author Eric Fisher stated. "The legal papers have previously recommended as a result that Prime Ticket's future is unquestionably threatened." Should Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket be consolidated into one network, the revenue loss to Fox could be within the 100s of millions. "Basically you are not just losing the advertising, but you are losing a few of the carriage costs too,Inch Fisher stated. Further complicating matters in your area is yet another 2011 development: the Off-shore 12 Conference's bold intend to debut its very own number of proprietary systems in August 2012, that will pry still more content from Fox Sports. Time Warner also designed a significant, although more compact-stakes, raid on Fox Sports content by inking an offer in November for 10 years' price of TV privileges towards the Major League Soccer champion La Universe beginning the coming year. Fox Sports maintains privileges to MLB's Angels, the NBA's Clippers and also the NHL's Nobleman and Ducks, however the stability of distributing them over two channels is restricted -- particularly with the Angels because the only summer season attraction. "Considering the fact that Time Warner gets the Universe and there is some a summer time foothold, I'd say Fox and Prime Ticket would be the more desperate party (for that Dodgers)," Fisher stated. Whomever will get dibs around the Dodgers pays very much for that privilege. Because of increasing values, the Dodgers figure to cost their next TV home a minimum of $150 million each year, possibly a lot more when the putting in a bid gets hotter. The Lakers' 20-year cope with Time Warner is thought to become worth roughly $200 million each year. The Dodgers' linchpin role for Los Angeles cable systems is certainly not new. When Fox acquired the Dodgers in the O'Malley family in 1998, it had been with track of getting a focal point that may launch that second all-sports cable network in La and forestall ESPN from entering the territory. Theoretically, Fox's hang on the Dodgers should not presently maintain risk. Their current deal runs through 2013, having a clause that through November gives Fox exclusive settling privileges to some publish-'13 extension, including an opportunity to match competing offers. However the ongoing legal drama surrounding outgoing Dodger owner Frank McCourt has put Fox's exclusivity around the ropes. Using the Dodgers still in personal bankruptcy court since their filing in June, lawyers for McCourt have asked for permission to instantly open the purchase of future media privileges to any or all comers to be able to maximize value for creditors. Settlement talks are happening, having a hearing around the matter scheduled for later this month. Mere several weeks ago, before becoming legal combatants, Fox and McCourt were allies. The media giant, which assisted finance McCourt's highly utilized acquisition of the Dodgers in 2004 and without doubt was searching to strengthen his dependence, made an unsecured loan in April towards the McCourt to keep his embattled possession dreams alive. Two several weeks later, a June deal between Fox and McCourt to increase Dodger broadcasting privileges through 2030 was declined by Major league baseball commissioner Bud Selig around the theory it offered the lengthy-term way forward for the Dodgers. If Fox does comes away using the Dodgers for that lengthy-term future, Fisher thought, "You might have a scenario where Prime Ticket will get amalgamated to some more front-and-center Dodger branding." How 'Victoria's Secret Fashion Show' Turns $12 Million Into $5 Billion in One Hour
This story appeared in the Dec. 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsVictoria's Secret Model Adriana Lima Survives Lingerie Show Without Food or WaterVictoria's Secret Fashion Show 2011: Inside the Star-Studded Celebration (Photos) Do we have the gun?" Todd Thomas, the collection designer for the 2011 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, set to air Nov. 29 on CBS, inspects a lavender tulle tutu worn by supermodel Lily Aldridge, wife of Kings of Leon lead singer Caleb Followill. "The gun," is a glue gun. And Thomas, who has seen his share of runway mishaps during nearly a decade with Victoria's Secret, needs it to tack up under-layers of tulle that have come loose in the back, slightly obscuring Aldridge's g-stringed derriere. PHOTOS: Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2011 It is five days before the Nov. 9 runway show, and about 30 people are jammed into a small room on the 12th floor of the midtown Manhattan headquarters of Victoria's Secret. Thomas, Sophia Neophitou, the British fashion editor who came aboard as head stylist last year, and Monica Mitro, executive vp brand communications and events and a 17-year veteran of Victoria's Secret, are furiously working to put the final touches on 69 looks to be worn by 36 models, more than ever have walked the runway at the annual underwear spectacle. Today's fitting is its own media event; fitters, dressers and assistants jockey for space in the stuffy room with photographers, reporters and video crews. "There are a lot of people here today, darling," says Neophitou, lifting her mane of grey-flecked black curls from her neck. The windows are thrown open in a futile attempt to lower the temperature in the room. STORY: Victoria's Secret Model Adriana Lima Survives Lingerie Show Without Food or Water Aldridge's lavender tutu is paired with a black velvet corset, diaphanous lavender push-up bra and red satin heels with ballet straps. "Can you walk for me pretty girl?" asks Neophitou. Aldridge flounces toward Thomas, Neophitou and Mitro. Neophitou rises from her Eames swivel chair and gently pats Aldridge's breasts. "They look good," she purrs, "amazing." ♦♦♦♦♦ Despite appearances, the Victoria's Secret fashion show is not really about fashion. Yes, the foundations of the runway getups are bras and panties that are available at your local Victoria's Secret store. But you can't buy Brazilian supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio's gold-plated wings festooned with 105,000 Swarovski crystals. Broadcast in more than 180 countries, the $12 million made-for-TV-event attracts the world's top models and features A-list musical guests. And it's all designed to burnish a brand that peddles fantasies to everyone from teenagers to suburban housewives of America. "It's become a performance-slash-lifestyle-slash-variety show and, of course, with models wearing intimate apparel," says Francois Lee of ad buying firm MediaVest. The special has shifted from "just an extension of a catalog to really showcasing the lifestyle aspect of the brand." "It's a marketing marvel," adds Bob Horowitz, president of reality production house JUMA Entertainment, who as the former head of IMG's U.S. television division has packaged his share of TV specials. The runway show started in 1995 as a modest proceeding at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan and has been televised regularly since 2001, when ABC first put it on. CBS has had the show since 2002 but did not air it in 2004 -- a response to the national outrage over Janet Jackson's Super Bowl nipple flash on the network. The TV special is designed to send consumers to the web or the company's 1,000-plus retail outlets -- just in time for the holiday season. And it works: Victoria's Secret, founded in 1977, last year raked in net sales of $5.5 billion. "It's the only one-hour network show dedicated to a single brand," says Mitro. "It puts our brand in front of millions of people around the world during the crucial holiday period." CBS licenses the show from Victoria's Secret for slightly more than $1 million, well below the $20 million it pays for the Grammys. The show is not exactly a ratings blockbuster -- 9 million viewers tuned in last year, compared with nearly 27 million who watched the Grammys this year -- but it does bring younger viewers to CBS; more than half of the 2010 audience was in the 18-49 demo. "We are a big-tent broadcaster. We want everybody," says Jack Sussman, executive vp specials, music and live events at CBS, who oversees production of the show. "This diversifies our portfolio of specials." Although it has never drawn an FCC indecency fine, the show has intermittently raised the ire of watchdog groups including the Parents Television Council. But despite the copious amount of taut flesh on display, the TV special features no pixilated nudity. "There are the occasional issues that come up unexpectedly," says Sussman. "But that's the beauty of postproduction." And Sussman, who says the show's viewership is 60 percent women, the same as for most of broadcast TV, has his own decency filter: "Do my two teenage daughters want to see it? Will my wife watch it? And will my mother not turn it off? And this show gets through that filter." The special is a mashup of runway spectacle, musical acts, behind-the-scenes fodder and vignettes about some of the models. And it has increasingly lured top-tier musical guests, critical for creating buzz. The Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, Usher and Katy Perry have all been paid to appear. This year's show, held at the Lexington Armory in NY, featured performances from Nicki Minaj and Maroon 5 -- whose frontman, Adam Levine, dates Victoria's Secret model Anne Vyalitsina -- and headliner Kanye West. He was joined onstage by surprise guest Jay-Z; they performed "Niggas in Paris," an F-bomb-laced paean to fame and materialism, as Jay-Z's pregnant wife Beyonce sat in the front row. (It had yet to be determined if the song will make it into the broadcast.) Leslie Wexner, the septuagenarian billionaire CEO of Victoria's Secret parent Limited Brands, is a staple at the show, which is also known, and judged by, the hodgepodge of celebrities it attracts. Russell Simmons, Michael Bay (who has directed Victoria's Secret commercials), Debbie Harry, Donna Karan, Alexander Wang and former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld attended this year. Orlando Bloom, husband of Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr, could be seen cheering demonstrably when his wife, who gave birth to their son in January, sauntered down the runway wearing the collection's now iconic $2.5 million Fantasy Treasure Bra -- designed by London Jewelers and embellished with nearly 3,400 precious stones including 142 carats of diamonds. Haute couture it is not. Maryna Linchuk wore a bubble skirt that looked like a frosted pink donut and Shannan Click sported a bra festooned with a blinking heart on each breast. None of these outré items is available at Victoria's Secret stores. Still, the show gets more national media attention than anything on the runways at NY Fashion Week. "It's one giant PR stunt," says Linda Ong, president of branding firm Truth Consulting. "It's about getting people to keep this very mass-market brand top-of-mind. The celebrities, the million-dollar bra. They always have some model who just had a baby, and so it's all about how much weight she lost. It's a pseudo-event. But because of the PR machine, people cover it likes it's news." That exposure can be a career maker for models. Former Victoria's Secret spokesmodels Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks have parlayed that fame into media mogul status. "It puts millions of dollars of advertising behind you," says Ivan Bart, senior vp of IMG Models. Victoria's Secret spokesmodels can earn $5 million a year, while those who don't have contracts with the company pocket $10,000 or more for the runway show alone, say sources. IMG Models has nine women in the runway show including Kerr, Lily Aldridge and Candace Swanepoel, all of whom have lucrative contracts as Victoria's Secret spokesmodels. "By promoting the brand you're getting more experience doing publicity, events, speaking on camera, talk shows -- everything that it takes to be a brand ambassador," says Bart. "That gives you tremendous visibility and opportunities." ♦♦♦♦♦ The acrid smell of hairspray and burnt hair permeates a long, cavernous room on the fifth floor of the Armory. It is Nov. 9, the day of the runway show, and the bomb-sniffing dogs from Spartan Security Services have cleared reporters and photographers who have made their way into the hair and makeup rotation, a five-hour media op with a buffet. The models -- wearing matching short magenta satin robes -- mingle with the media mob while they are alternately assaulted by an army tugging at their tresses and dabbing lip gloss on pillow lips. (There are 21 makeup artists, 19 hair stylists and 50 dressers.) A paper sign clipped to a heavy blue curtain indicates the "bronzing" corner. And a peek through a crack in the drapes reveals dressers slathering spray tan on a topless model. "Make sure that the girls have no shimmer at all on the body," admonishes head makeup artist Tom Pecheux. In another corner, the $2.5 million Fantasy Treasure Bra is displayed on a form while security specialist Darren Pittman stands sentinel. ("I have to stay with the bra," he says.) It will appear in the Victoria's Secret holiday catalog, though it isn't likely to find a buyer. In fact, none of the multimillion-dollar Fantasy Bras has been purchased. They end up getting dismantled, say sources. But all of that bling is simply stitched onto the Victoria's Secret Gorgeous Push-up Bra. And that particular fantasy can be yours for about $50. Sports' struggles can train Hollywood
A sparse crowd attends a game title title involving the La Dodgers as well as the Philadelphia Phillies this summer season at Dodger Stadium.
For any very long time Hollywood's leading players required refuge utilizing their pursuit to entertain the earth by settling into choice seats at Opponents and Dodgers games -- specially when the area teams were winning game titles.Just what can the town glean within the sports world's current withdrawal resulting in withdrawal leading to convulsions -- including labor strife threatening to clean the Basketball season as well as the auction in the Dodgers, carrying out a public meltdown that will have people wondering who'll play entrepreneurs Frank and Jamie McCourt inside the movie? These situations aren't completely similar, but parallels to entertainment provide some training.Beneath the McCourts, the Dodgers handled to alienate fans from the products came out being among baseball's unshakable sights. Even when they was mediocre the franchise consistently came well, due to the fact likely to Dodger Stadium was this kind of enjoyable experience. It's possible, basically, to mismanage a beloved property in to a temporary shambles. And also on the entertainment side, the deluge of options means such problems can wreak havoc faster than in the past. For that Basketball, where the lockout has mentioned part of the season and could jeopardize the whole factor, you'll naturally watch charges and counter-charges flying via Twitter without hearing echoes in the last authors strike.Obviously, the talent guilds are substantially totally different from professional sports, since anybody drawing an Basketball or Nfl salary nowadays is raking inside a large amount of cash. There isn't middle-class and fighting people, as they are true for a number of stars, authors and company company directors to whom unemployment might be standard and dealing the welcome break. You will discover key common threads, though, beginning using the brevity of careers (particularly in sports), which gives management a effective bit of leverage -- nobody desires to discard their prime producing years -- and could drive a wedge between legitimate "stars" and journeymen. Billionaire entrepreneurs also execute a fair job impersonating major art galleries when insisting their broken enterprize model really ensures they are the aggrieved, desperate parties. The primary one element of reassurance, for Hollywood and sports, might be the public's failure to help keep grudges against items that delight and divert them. The Nfl experienced its own labor discord and rapidly roared within the ratings. Past Basketball and Major league baseball stoppages and ripoffs created expected griping -- a pox by themselves over-fortunate houses! -- that shown toothless once the business of thrilling 2010 national football league 2010 nfl playoffs and seven-game series began again.Lots of people believe it is equally difficult to stay mad at movies and tv, when the way to obtain friction originates from strikes or conservatives (mainly) who insist they'll boycott shows or movies because of a star or filmmaker's politics. Exactly the same factor applies to cable-carriage fee disputes, which rarely trigger the wholesale customer flight that channels dangle to weaken a distributor's resolve throughout discussions just before the parties inevitably achieve a contract.Ultimately, clients are creatures of habit that don't like needing to contemplate individuals behind the curtain if the involves their entertainment. Confront these with the fact artists and sports sports athletes don't ply their trade strictly from devotion to craft or the sport, and they are likely to lash out temporarily their way, or at management.Get rid of the distraction and hang out something that like, however, and many types of is forgotten. Yet despite repeated demos from the dynamic, inside the warmth as soon as fans and media bloggers frequently appear false sensors about residual damage and unforgiving audiences.Former Dodger Steve Garvey, who's part of a business investing in an offer for your franchise, recently told a sports radio show, "Sports might be the memory business," which reflects a stylish sense of nostalgia, inserted with the warming imagery of fathers passing their passions to sons. The simple truth is harsher than that -- and nowadays, more likely involves father watching sports alone. Ultimately, the amount of youthful kids stay awake until evening time to check out large games almost more often than not scheduled beneath the lights -- not to create shared recollections, but rather to improve TV revenue? For Hollywood and sports, therein lies the particular lesson: Due to its excesses, sports frequently finds itself inside the amnesia business. For that pervasiveness of the condition, the Basketball and whoever eventually ends up having the Dodgers must thank their lucky stars. Contact John Lowry at john.lowry@variety.com

Brett Ratner Never 'Banged' Olivia Munn; Uses Gay Slur to Describe Rehearsing [UPDATE]
UPDATE: In a statement to TheWrap, director Brett Ratner apologized for saying that "rehearsals are for fags" after a 'Tower Heist' screening on Friday night. "I apologize for any offense my remarks caused. It was a dumb and outdated way of expressing myself," Ratner said. "Everyone who knows me knows that I don't have a prejudiced bone in my body. But as a storyteller I should have been much more thoughtful about the power of language and my choice of words." [TheWrap] EARLIER: Today in disgusting things Brett Ratner said: after causing an Internet meltdown on Friday by saying he "banged" actress Olivia Munn when she "wasn't Asian," the 'Tower Heist' director told Howard Stern on Monday that he was not totally truthful. "I said I banged her three times, which wasn't true," Ratner said. Pressed by Stern as to whether he had sex with Munn at all, the director replied, "No." Of course, that's nothing compared to the homosexual slur he dropped during a post-'Tower Heist' screening Q&A over the weekend in Los Angeles. According to Vulture -- as well as D.C. Douglas on Twitter -- Ratner was asked after an Arclight screening of 'Tower Heist' about whether rehearsals were helpful to the creative process. His reply? "Rehearsing is for fags." Ratner is producing the 84th annual Academy Awards in February. [via @oliviamunn, Vulture] [Photo: Getty] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED
Dish Network Misses 3Q Earnings Targets With 111,000 Drop In Subs
Analysts feared that Dish Network would come in lighter than they’d forecast when they saw how well DirecTV did with its NFL Sunday Ticket promotion and lower-than-expected sub losses at Comcast and other cable operators. Dish ended 3Q with net income of $319.1M, up 30.2% from the period last year, on revenues of $3.6B, up 12.3%. That revenue figure was just slightly lower than the $3.65B the Street projected. But earnings, at 71 cents a share, missed analysts’ target of 73 cents. The big questions today will probably revolve around the 111,000 drop in subscriptions to 13.95M — that compares to a 29,000 loss of subs in the same period last year. Before the recent run of 3Q announcements from Dish’s competitors, Brean Murray Carret analyst Todd Mitchell predicted that the company would lose 25,000 customers and Credit Suisse’ Stefan Anninger forecast a drop of 87,000. On Friday Anninger revised his projection to -174,000. “We spoke to some investors that had anticipated a loss between 150k to 200k (after DirecTV disclosed its) results last week so overall, we would say this is not as bad as feared,” says Wells Fargo Securities analyst Marci Ryvicker. Dish attributed the loss to competitive pressures as well as “the weak housing market in the United States combined with lower discretionary spending.” Dish says that Blockbuster, which it acquired in April, had a net loss of $177,000 on revenues of $347M, but didn’t provide a comparison with previous years saying that the operation has changed so muchit “would not prove useful in assessing our post acquisition earnings and cash flows.” Blockbuster operated 1,500 retail stores as of the end of September. “We have negotiated flexible termination provisions in the leases of over 900 of these stores, should estimates of future revenue growth not meet our expectations,” Dish says. The company also announced this morning that it will pay a non-recurring dividend of $2 a share. That news “not only represents a welcome return of cash to shareholders but also signals that Chairman Charlie Ergen isn’t going to hoard cash to build his wireless field of dreams (probably),” says Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett.

Olivia Wilde and Steve Buscemi Reportedly Negotiating for 'Burt Wonderstone'
More 'Burt Wonderstone' casting news that could only be described as -- wait for it -- magical! (GROAN!) (SERIOUSLY?) THR reports that Olivia Wilde and Steve Buscemi are in negotiations to join Steve Carell, Jim Carrey and a currently negotiating James Gandolfini in the magician comedy for New Line Cinema. Abracadabra! Or something. 'Wonderstone' focuses on two estranged Las Vegas magicians (Carell and the role Buscemi would play) who team-up to take on a dangerous street magician (Carrey). Wilde would play Carell's love interest -- his former assistant who now works with Carrey's character. Gandolfini will play a billionaire casino boss. While Buscemi seems somewhat, there are conflicting reports on Wilde. Deadline reports that she's merely on the list of potential co-stars with Sarah Silverman, Judy Greer and Jessica Biel. Both THR and Variety have Wilde negotiating for a part in the film. Stay tuned. Directed Don Scardino ('30 Rock'), 'Burt Wonderstone' is set to go in front of cameras in January. Prime target was Gene Hackman, whose performance as wayward patriarch Royal Tenenbaum is one kind of his best, even when his mood on set wasn't always probably the most amiable. Anderson acknowledged that dealing with Hackman would be a challenge, but stated it had been the veteran actor's participation that assisted secure the relaxation from the stellar ensemble, that also includes Danny Glover, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson (the second co-authored the Oscar-nominated script with Anderson). The director stated that although Hackman ongoing to pass through around the role for over a year, his persistence compensated off. "He was kind of instructed to perform the movie," stated Anderson. "I simply stored disturbing him. I used him lower. I do not have much use of him, so I'm not sure generate an income worked out that, but eventually he just caved." "Well, he's weak," deadpanned Murray. "Gene is weak. That is what we found. Whenever you challenge someone like Gene, you discover his weakness." "I loved finding yourself in moments with him," stated Paltrow. "He was type of a bear of the guy, however i also found something very sweet and sad inside. I believe he's among the finest stars whatever person resided. I am talking about, if you are Gene Hackman you may be inside a fucking negative mood if you would like.Inch Huston referred to her first day's dealing with Hackman, shooting an exterior scene on the cold morning, which needed her to slap the actor over the face. "I had been particularly afraid because I possibly could tell he wasn't in an exceedingly good mood," she remembered. "In testing, I believe I smacked his lapel, therefore we went ahead and shot it, and that i hit him an excellent one. I saw the imprint of my hands on his oral cavity and that i thought, he will kill me." Anderson added that although Hackman have been not wanting to say "Goddamn," according to the script, the slap motivated him to utter the term automatically. The director joked he attempted to possess Murray on looking for protection when shooting moments with Hackman. "I'll stick up for Gene," volunteered Murray. "You realize, the term 'cocksucker' will get tossed around a great deal. However I will require that word and throw it using this room since it does not belong here. I'd hear these tales like, 'Gene attempted to kill me today.' And I'd say, 'Kill you? You are within the union. He can't kill you.'" On the roll, Murray then continued to express Hackman's problems around the shoot were triggered mainly by needing to act opposite Luke Wilson, who had been swooning over Paltrow at that time and Kumar Pallana, who performed Royal's Indian partner, Pagoda. "He needed to use Luke, who had been dizzy for each other and could not think straight, and Kumar, each day,Inch stated Murray. "Kumar makes Luke Wilson seem like Gielgud." The final time The Royal Tenenbaums tested at NYFF, at its 2001 premiere, the film were built with a different soundtrack, featuring Beatles music. But Anderson stated privileges was not guaranteed at that time, so he enlisted Paltrow's assistance to lock them lower. "Wes put me on the mission. I attempted to bribe Paul McCartney. Sex and everything," joked Paltrow. "Did not work. He loved the film. Only then do we went bowling, and that he stated he's nothing related to the privileges." "Paul McCartney, too, is weak," stated Murray. Anderson is presently in publish-production on Moonrise Kingdom for Focus Features, but rejected to discuss the brand new feature. "I do not genuinely have a factor to say of that movie," stated Anderson. "I'd just provide you with a circular lengthy answer that does not have real point. However I think it will likely be good." Film Academy Leaders Hype New LACMA Movie Museum Plans: All Of The Pieces Fit Together
Just whenever you think it is a defunct duck, it’s back and quacking. For individuals who may have had the imagine a global class movie museum visiting fruitionin L.A.,film capital around the globe(countme in on that), last evening’s announcement the Academy of movement Picture Arts & Sciences and also the La County Museum of Arthave begun the entire process of finally making that dream become a reality is nice news throughout. Andthat longtime dream museum, that was turning intomore of the nightmare for that Academy, will beright lower the road in the Acad’s own Beverly Hillsides headquarters (a minimum of that’s the program). The Academy issaying the project located within the historic old May Co. on Wilshire Blvd now referred to as LACMA West will require 3 to 5 years to accomplish. “We take presctiption the short track but it will likely be based on fund raising,” stated the Acad’s new Boss Beginning Hudson, who spoke beside me todayin a celebration callwith Academy Leader Tom Sherak and LACMA Boss and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan. Hudson wasn’t tossing out official figures but states she needs it'll cost you under half the rough estimate of $480 million the Academy had specific for his or her earlier foiledplan to erect this museum in Hollywood where theyspent about$50 million to date purchasing land (which theynow own outright) near their Pickford Focus on Vine Street. However the idea to accommodate the museum rather in the already established 300,000-square-feet space on Wilshire really dates back decades when it had been broached by former Academy Presidents Walter Mirisch and Bob Rehme. It heated up again in regards to a year . 5 ago having a casual conversation between another Govan and the other former Academy Leader Sid Ganis, who then introduced the museum mind to Sherak after which Boss Bruce Davis. “For around an hour . 5 Used to do something I rarely do. I simply took in to someone talk who were built with a vision along with a dream of what this may mean towards the Town of La to create different artistic representations, especially our two artistic representations together in one location,” stated Sherak, who stressed the Board wanted a museum within their lifetime but the Academy didn’t understand how lengthy it might drive them to boost the cash and make one themselves. Govan came to save the day. “Being within the museum world, I see film programs at museums in Paris and Frankfurt. I needed that in La and that i understood the Academy were built with a dream plus they were built with a great resource. Therefore the question was what could we provide to assist which was the start of the conversation,” stated Govan. Sherak described the Board approved further going through the alliance with LACMA and set a committee together. But after June 1 when Davis upon the market and Hudson showed up, things really began moving. Before she lefther previous job,Hudson forged an alliance with LACMA and Govan by which Film Independent would take overrunning themuseum’s troubled film program so she already understood him and sparked immediately towards the new museum idea. “It was like likely to target practice and striking the bulls-eye 15 occasions consecutively. Before anybody understood it, including me, there have been budgets, and she or he was like Road Runner. Next factor I understood i was all inside a room and lastly discussed an M.O.U. (Memorandum of Understanding) and that he presented it to his Board and that we given to our Board last evening and that we made the decision i was gonna visit a museum within our lifetime,” stated a clearly vitalized Sherak. The functional process cannot come in a better time because it seemsmajor collections that certainly may have been part of the brand new museum 're going on the market and being offered piecemeal to personal enthusiasts, many from the country.Seven-hundred products in the John Wayne estate including keycostumes, honours, scripts and private documents opting for auction a few days ago, while Darlene Reynolds is ongoing to market off her invaluable assortment of costumes after fruitless attempts to obtain a museum going herself. “Not which i could ask that people could ever have purchased the Darlene Reynolds collection in general. We couldn’t did that. The gathering’s worth lots of money, you'd have needed to put an oil well up,” stated Sherak. But Hudson really wants to stress exactly what the Academy already has by itself. “As you well be aware of Academy makes lots of investment through the years in building our planet-class archive and film library like none other now our year-round work may have a house, a location to show it, a distillation of all of the Academy’s missions that everyone doesn’t know enough about, ” stated Hudson in mentioning that there's a lot more towards the organization than simply the Academy awards. “We have 42,000 movie posters and ten million catalogued movie photographs. We now have such beautiful items in our film background and there hasn’t been a public spot to see individuals or access individuals.” Sherak highlights the Academy is definitely searching for purchases. “We convey more stuff saved than Carter has liver pills. The end result is we never stop doing that. Which is in most areas of the company in the first printing press of movement picture one-sheets. We now have stuff saved that will spin your mind, that nobody is aware of. It’s a ongoing factor for all of us,” he states. And Govan thinks the brand new museum may even breed more. “From a museum perspective Personally, i have spoken toa large amount of people concerning the items and posters and things they've and i believe there’s that sense when there have been a museum people would donate. Metropolitan areas build great museums the ones seem like there’s a house for that objects they've looked after throughout their existence plus they be aware of public can usually benefit from that,” he states. Sherak also really wants to make obvious they haven't abandoned the Hollywood site (although I'm toldkey figures in the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce were caught unexpectedly — and never happy campers — once they read todayof the Academy’s proposednew locationfor their museum). “We own that land. It’s ours free and obvious and that we’re now along the way of investing money to raze individuals structures and to really make it a location to visit. We’ll most likely perform some exhibits there. We’ll perform some stuff using the land. I’ve always had this imagine running an outdooor theatre there which I do believe in. We’re certainly in Hollywood. The Pickford Center sits there. We’re invested. We’re not going anywhere. The program would be to make that land helpful to us,” Sherak states. But clearly the momentum has moved from Hollywood towards the historic building that sits on a corner of Wilshire and Fairfax and that was built-in 1939, the entire year many still feel was the finest ever for that movies. “It just appeared such as the timing was right,” Hudson stated. “All the pieces fit together.”
